This captivating artwork invites viewers into a profound exploration of ancient beliefs through the fascinating lens of mental archaeology. Inspired by the rich tapestry of Buryat mythology, this piece breathes life into the image of Etugen (Ul'gen-Ekhe), the revered Queen of the Earth — portraying her not as an ancient matriarch, but as an eternally youthful and vibrant goddess brimming with inherent strength.

The Myth
The earth has a name.
This piece is part of a series exploring ancient beliefs through the lens of mental archaeology. It was inspired by Buryat mythology and the image of Etugen (Ul'gen-Ekhe) — the Queen of the Earth, one of the most revered goddesses of the pantheon.
It depicts Etugen not as an old woman dwelling deep within the earth, as she is often portrayed, but as an eternally young woman, full of strength. Only her eyes reveal the depth of what she has witnessed — a knowing sadness rests there.
Upon her head rests a traditional protective headdress with braids. The moon settles behind one braid; the sun rises behind the other. And from the center of her chest flows a spring that nourishes all life — an endless gesture of care, unbroken since the beginning of time.
Her gaze holds the profound depth of ages, a gentle sadness hinting at the countless cycles of life and renewal she has witnessed.
This piece is about the eternal renewal of life and the quiet grounding that the earth offers to anyone willing to feel it. A reminder: no matter what happens, beneath your feet lies not just soil, but a living, nurturing presence.
The masterful use of oil, gold leaf, and crystals imbues the artwork with an unparalleled luminescence — making it a truly spectacular addition to any collection. It is an ideal centerpiece for a modern interior, a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates art steeped in mythology and spiritual depth, and a vibrant declaration of life's continuous cycle.
