Artist Statement:

I don't paint the world. I build objects through which it can speak back — objects that don't just speak to your eyes, but to your whole body.

I mix memories, not just pigments — earth from a specific place, a stone from a shoreline, a seed from a forest I walked through. Each material is an anchor to a moment that no longer exists. The result is not a painting in the usual sense, but an artifact — something that keeps time the way a body keeps memory.
I see sounds. I hear colours. These artifacts are built as rituals — not for a crowd, but for one viewer, in one moment. Ribbons. Knots. Bells that ring when the air moves. These forms come from world traditions — from the North, from archaic beliefs and practices — but here they serve a single purpose: to interrupt the monkey mind, the restless consciousness of the modern person, and bring you back to your senses.

Take "The Depth of Summer." It began as a single moment on a summer river — golden light spreading across water lily leaves. I painted it layer by layer, adding gold leaf until the surface held both the ancient and the present. The scene existed on the walls of pyramids. It returns every summer. I just brought it back.

My work follows a cycle: descent and return. The winter artifacts are dark and sealed — memory becomes material. The summer ones are gilded and open — gold returns. Not a division between dark and light, but a record of transformation.

These artifacts are doors that don't close — even after you look away. Stay long enough, and they may reveal a secret.
If this resonates, I would be glad to share more.

Bio:
Daria Harlauta is a painter based in St. Petersburg, Russia, whose practice sits at the intersection of classical technique and sensory experimentation. She holds a Bachelor's degree in easel painting from Herzen University (2009), but soon found that clean, beautiful canvases could not hold everything she wanted to say.

So she changed.

The turning point came during her first expedition to the islands of the White Sea. After a month in the North, she realised that painting nature "as taught" looked pale next to its actual power. She stopped trying to capture reality and began to dig. Further expeditions followed — across the Russian North, Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

What emerged is a method she calls mental archaeology and sensory alchemy — a practice that combines classical technique with gold and copper leaf, bronze Tibetan bells, coloured ribbons, earth, stone, seeds, and scent. Her paintings are not made to be looked at. They are made to be experienced.
Her work is rooted in years of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, where she studied petroglyphs, ancient monuments, and the material traces of hunter-gatherer cultures — their tools, markings, and surviving ritual practices. Alongside this, she explored archaic belief systems of the world's peoples — a thread that runs through her series "Four Elements of the Silk Road." From this research she took not only visual language but ritual structures — ribbons, knots, bells — reworked into something deeply personal.

She works in cycles, following the rhythm of descent and return: dark, sealed winter works and light, gilded summer ones. She is currently developing two new series, "Spring's Eve Dream" and "Encapsulated."

She has created over 400 works, held 13 solo exhibitions, and participated in more than 70 group exhibitions across Russia, Europe, and Israel. Her works are held in private collections worldwide and in the collection of the V.A. Noskin Open Museum in St. Petersburg.
But numbers don't matter.

What matters is this: she believes art can be a tool for cognition — not decoration, not merely investment, but a bridge between the ancient and the not-yet-born, between the viewer and the non-human world.
She is open to collaborations with galleries and curators who are interested in art that works through the body, not just the eye.
